To show the higher compression ratios that can be achieved by DotNetCompression we compared the sizes of a large number of documents that were compressed using the GZipStream class of DotNetCompression and the GZipStream class of .NET.

In all the following comparisons it is clear that DotNetCompression compresses more than .NET does. If you wish to skip the details, you can go directly to the summary and graphs.

Measurements

For our measurements we used 392 documents from 25 publicly available sources on the Web, their sizes ranging from about 100 bytes to more than 1 GB.

The following tables display the size of the original files and their size when compressed by DotNetCompression and by .NET. Smallest collections are listed first, largest last. All sizes are in bytes.

Compression ratios indicate the relative size of the original file against the size of the compressed file. For example, a 1:0.20 ratio indicates that the size of the compressed file it refers to is a fifth of the size of the original file.

We used Z Compressor 1.2.0 to compress with the GZipStream of DotNetCompression and MSGZ Compressor 1.1.0 to compress with the GZipStream of .NET.  All documents were retrieved in June 2007 and links to their original locations are provided; please note that many of these documents are updated often, so their content and size might have changed since.

Analysis

All 392 documents had their size reduced much more with DotNetCompression than with .NET.

For each collection, the total size of all its documents compressed by DotNetCompression ranged between 49% and 87% of the total size of all its documents compressed by .NET.

Table 1 compares for each collection the total size of all its documents compressed by DotNetCompression to the total size of all its documents compressed by .NET.

Conclusion

The GZipStream class of DotNetCompression can provide consistently and significantly better compression than the GZipStream class of .NET.

You can use Z Compressor and MSGZ Compressor to do your own comparisons.
